For thousands of years, sled dogs helped Eskimos survive. The native people used sled dogs for land travel, hunting, trapping, and transporting goods. The thick-haired dogs also accompanied explorers to the North and South poles. Sled dogs continue to work in remote areas of the Arctic.

Human Dog Sled Competition - The Human Dog Sled Competition is an event held in February during the Winterfest celebration of Lowell, MA. Each year, a field of approximately 60 teams compete against each other in a single elimination tournament to determine the International Human Dog Sled Champion.

It is not certain when this unique form of transport was first thought of by humankind nor where it originated, but it may well have been in eastern Siberia, whose tribes have a long history of nomadic winter travel.

Togo (dog) - Togo (October 1913 – December 5, 1929) was the sled dog who led Leonhard Seppala and his dog sled team as they covered the longest distance in the 1925 relay of diphtheria antitoxin from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, to combat an outbreak of the disease. The run is commemorated by the annual Iditarod dog sled race.
