In the winter of 1917, an odd golden-colored puppy was born in New Hampshire. Arthur T. Walden named the puppy Chinook after the powerful winds he'd experienced in the mountains of Alaska during the Gold Rush. Over the next 12 years, Walden and his amazing First Chinook became front-page celebrities across the U.S., setting mushing records and popularizing the sport of sled dog racing. They established and entirely new breed of sled dog named after Chinook, and joined Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his historic First Antarctic Expedition in 1928. Togo (dog) - Togo (October 1913 â€“ December 5, 1929) was the sled dog who led Leonhard Seppala and his dog sled team as they covered the longest distance in the 1925 relay of diphtheria antitoxin from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, to combat an outbreak of the disease. The run is commemorated by the annual Iditarod dog sled race.

Jeff King (mushing) - Jeff King (born 1946 in North Fork, California) is a well-known distance musher who moved to Alaska in 1975 and began racing in 1980. A successful sled dog racer, he won the Yukon Quest in 1989, and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race three times, in 1993, 1996, and 1998, along with many other sled dog races.
